AI Model Documentation
What AI model documentation must include, EU AI Act Article 11 requirements, model cards, technical file obligations, and best practices for high-risk AI systems.
AI model documentation is the formal record of how an AI system was designed, trained, validated, and tested — including the data, methods, performance metrics, limitations, and intended use cases.
EU AI Act Article 11 requires providers of high-risk AI systems to maintain technical documentation before placing the system on the market. This documentation must enable assessment of conformity with the requirements of the Act.
Model documentation is also the foundation of AI governance: without it, organizations cannot demonstrate responsible development, respond to regulatory inquiries, or maintain meaningful human oversight.
EU AI Act Technical File Requirements
Article 11 and Annex IV specify that the technical documentation must include: general description of the system, description of development process, information on training, validation, and testing, information on monitoring and functioning, and information on risk management. Documentation must be updated throughout the system lifecycle.
